AUB Mediterraneo Deans

Dear members of the AUB community,

I am pleased to announce the appointment of three distinguished AUB professors who will serve as deans of the three faculties at our twin campus outside of Lebanon, the American University of Beirut – Mediterraneo (AUB Mediterraneo) in Pafos, Cyprus. These accomplished leaders bring with them a wealth of expertise and a deep commitment to academic excellence. They will play a key role in this groundbreaking venture, as we bring AUB’s transformative education, research, and service to a wider community.

Dr. Malek Tabbal has accepted the responsibility to serve as the first dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) at AUB Mediterraneo. Under his leadership, the faculty will foster interdisciplinary collaboration and cultivate a vibrant academic environment. A recipient of the AUB Teaching Excellence Award in 2004, Dr. Tabbal is professor of physics at AUB and has served as director of the Leadership, Equity, and Diversity (LEAD) Initiative (2018-21), director of the AUB USAID-University Scholarship Program (2011-19), associate dean of FAS (2009 and 2017), and chair of the Department of Physics (2004-05 and 2007-09). He received his BS and MS in physics from AUB in 1986 and 1988, respectively, and his PhD in applied physics from École Polytechnique de Montréal, Canada, in 1994.

Dr. Salah Sadek will serve as the first dean of the Faculty of Engineering at AUB Mediterraneo. Currently professor of civil engineering and associate dean at the Maroun Semaan Faculty of Engineering and Architecture at AUB, Dr. Sadek brings extensive administrative experience and an outstanding record of service to the university and his profession, in Lebanon and beyond. Under his leadership, the faculty will develop and advance innovative programs at AUB Mediterraneo. He was chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at AUB (2008-11) and a recipient of the 2005 AUB Teaching Excellence Award. Dr. Sadek earned his BE in civil engineering from AUB in 1984, and his MS and PhD in geotechnical engineering from Colorado State University (1985) and the University of California-Berkeley (1993), respectively.

The first dean of the School of Business at AUB Mediterraneo will be Dr. Alain Daou, currently associate professor of entrepreneurship at the Olayan School of Business (OSB) and director of the Nature Conservation Center at AUB. Dr. Daou's background in business education and social entrepreneurship will ensure the school's commitment to excellence and innovation. Dr. Daou is currently the convener of the Management, Marketing, and Entrepreneurship Track at OSB. He received his bachelor’s degree in international management from Notre Dame University in Lebanon (2001), and his MBA in international development and humanitarian action (2010) and PhD in management (2014), both from Laval University in Canada.

Please join me in extending hearty congratulations and well wishes to Drs. Malek Tabbal, Salah Sadek, and Alain Daou as they embark on this exciting journey at AUB Mediterraneo. Their expertise, dedication, and vision will help shape the future of our university and the growing communities we serve.
